How to get inspired by Margot Robbie’s Barbie workout

If you’re Barbie, you wake up full of energy and are ready to take on the world, even on hot pink rollerblades! Life is just an endless string of dance parties (which, admittedly, is great cardio) and days spent on the beach. However, if you’re a real woman like actress Margot Robbie tasked with portraying the iconic doll on screen, you’ll have to put in a little more work.

According to David Higgins, Robbie’s long-time personal trainer, the secret to Robbie’s toned Barbie physique isn’t a secret at all – it’s a winning combination of two days of strength training and four days of Reformer Pilates. This dynamic duo builds long, lean muscles and improves flexibility.

Strength train like Barbie

Barbie doesn’t even use stairs in her Dreamhouse – and who’d want to when you could hop on the slide or literally float out the door? Robbie, however, put hers to work in the gym. The strength training aspect of her “Barbie workout” included lower body-focused exercises like squats, lunges, leg presses and deadlifts. She also focused on her core and upper body with exercises like military presses, push-ups, pull-ups and chest presses. To finish off her weight training sessions, Robbie would perform a little light cardio using a skipping rope or going for a quick jog.

If you’d like to try strength training yourself, you’ll find our gym floor boasts some of the world’s best strength training equipment and a great selection of free-hand weights. This way, you can start light and gradually increase the weight as you get stronger. Our personal trainers could easily help you create a Margot Robbie-inspired workout or, better yet, tailor one to suit your fitness level and individual needs.

Pilates brings new meaning to Barbie-Core

There’s a reason why so many celebrities are hooked on Reformer Pilates. This equipment-based workout uses springs and resistance bands to engage your entire body, especially your core. In fact, when the Barbie cast got into a friendly competition to see who could hold a plank position the longest, Robbie came in second, holding the position for 4 minutes and 10 seconds! (If you’re wondering who won, it was her trainer while “Ken”, AKA Ryan Gosling, scooped up third place.)

Reformer Pilates also goes a long way towards creating long, lean muscle and improving your posture. If you’re playing Barbie, you’ll know it’s important to carry yourself with grace which is probably why Robbie was grateful for her background as a ballet dancer. To this day, she still enjoys taking Barre classes, much like those you’ll find at FitnGlam.

Remember, queens don’t compare crowns

At FitnGlam, we really resonated with one of the key messages in Barbie which is that every woman is unique, strong and beautiful in their own way. If you want to empower yourself with Robbie’s Barbie workout, or any workout for that matter, keep the focus on feeling confident, healthy and strong, not achieving an unrealistic ideal. Your goal is to become the very best version of you, never anyone else. So, grab your weights and water bottle and embrace your unique fitness journey – but Barbie will give you extra points if they’re pink!
